Claude's price tag starts at $17 a month. That number tells you almost nothing about what your company will actually pay. In 2026 Anthropic sells five tiers (Anthropic, 2026), and the one built for large companies no longer has a fixed price at all: Enterprise is $20 per seat plus usage billed at API rates. The seat is the entry fee. Usage is the bill.

How much does Claude cost in 2026?

On the Team plan the numbers worth remembering are $20 a month for a Standard seat billed annually and $100 for a Premium seat that carries 5x the usage.

Two details matter more than the sticker prices.

First, every surface draws from one pool. Chat, Claude Code, Cowork, mobile and desktop all consume the same usage allowance, measured in rolling 5-hour sessions with weekly limits on top (Anthropic, 2026). A developer running Claude Code all afternoon is spending the same allowance the team's chat users depend on.

Second, limits are no longer walls. On paid plans, users who hit their cap can turn on usage credits and keep working at standard API rates. That is the quiet flip: a fixed subscription becomes a metered account the moment someone is busy enough to hit the ceiling.

How is Claude Enterprise priced?

Enterprise drops the pretense of flat pricing entirely. You pay $20 per seat per month for access, then every token your organization runs through chat, Claude Code or Cowork is billed at API rates on top. Admins get org and user level spend limits, SCIM, audit logs and custom data retention. But the structural fact stands: your Claude bill now scales with the models chosen and the tasks run, not with headcount.

What are Claude's API rates?

API pricing is per million tokens. The model choice moves the bill by an order of magnitude.

*Introductory pricing through August 31, 2026. Standard pricing is $3/$15 after that. If your budget assumes Sonnet stays at $2, it expires in a month.

Levers that cut these rates: prompt caching reduces repeated input cost by up to 90%, batch processing takes 50% off asynchronous workloads and routing light tasks to Haiku instead of Opus cuts the per-call cost by 5x. Add-ons go the other way: web search costs $10 per thousand searches, code execution is metered per container-hour and US-only inference carries a 1.1x premium.

How does Claude pricing compare with ChatGPT?

Tier for tier, the stickers are nearly identical. Per OpenAI's pricing page (OpenAI, 2026), individuals pay $20 for ChatGPT Plus against $17 to $20 for Claude Pro. Power users pay $100 for ChatGPT Pro Codex or $200 for Pro Max against Claude Max from $100. Teams pay $20 to $25 per seat on ChatGPT Business, the same range as Claude Team Standard.

The real difference sits at the enterprise tier. Anthropic put the meter on the invoice: $20 a seat, usage on top, visible line by line. OpenAI negotiates custom commitments that hide the same variability inside a flat number until renewal. Neither approach removes usage risk. One shows it to you monthly. The other shows it to you once a year, at the negotiating table.

What does Claude cost a 50-person team?

Simple arithmetic from the listed prices. A 50-person company on Team, all Standard seats billed annually, pays $1,000 a month, or $12,000 a year. Give the ten heaviest users Premium seats instead and it becomes $1,800 a month, or $21,600 a year.

Move the same company to Enterprise and the floor drops to $1,000 a month, but the meter starts. If ten developers each run $150 of Claude Code usage through API-rate billing, that alone adds $1,500 a month. More than the seats themselves. This is the pattern to internalize: at enterprise scale, seats are the minority of the bill. Usage is the majority. Headcount predicts the floor. Behavior sets the ceiling.

Why your Claude bill is hard to forecast

So what does Claude AI cost your company? Put the pieces together. Seats are predictable. Everything that makes Claude useful is not. A team of 200 on Enterprise has a floor of $4,000 a month. The ceiling depends on which models people pick, how long their sessions run, how many agents they leave working and how often power users spill into usage credits. Two enterprises with identical seat counts can receive bills an order of magnitude apart.

Finance sees one line item from Anthropic. It does not see that 12 engineers on Claude Code drove 60% of it, or that a marketing team burns Opus tokens on tasks Haiku handles fine, or that the same company also pays for ChatGPT and Copilot seats doing overlapping work.
